Rohr: Why I Invited Ighalo; Thoughts On Onyekuru, Collins For Super Eagles – Libya Clashes

By Johnny Edward in Uyo:
Super Eagles coach,Gernot Rohr, has explained that Odion Ighalo was called up for the team’s 2019 Africa Cup Nations qualifying double header against Libya due to his consistent scoring form in the Chinese Super League for Changchun Yatai, reports

Ighalo has scored 20 CSL goals for Changchun Yatai so far this season, but has barely been impressive for the Super Eagles after the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“Ighalo is a player who did very well for the country during the World Cup qualifiers, particularly against Cameroon,” Rohr said during his media conference in Uyo on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium.

“He had a difficult World Cup, which was not so easy for him, but he is doing well for his club having scored over 20 goals – it was a good reason to invite him.

“And we don’t have the time to change all our offensive players and that was why we invited Isaac Success.”

“The problem is to find the understanding with the other players. We have a new player in Samuel Kalu, so we need more communication

“We can also play like we did against Iceland with two strikers, where we lined up Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho.

“We also have Henry Onyekuru who plays for Galatasaray. He scored a fantastic goal against Liberia. So we are good in that area.

“Also the spirit of competition is now there in the team.

“Winning Libya won’t be easy, that’s why we are preparing hard for this game. With two wins, we are through to the AFCON.”

Rohr who is targeting his first home win the AFCON qualifiers having lost to South Africa last June also gives a strong incline that Paderborn left back Jamilu Collins could make his official Super Eagles debut against Libya on Saturday after closely monitoring him at his German club.

“Collins is interesting for us. He has the qualities to play very well for us,” Rohr remarked.

“Perhaps he will start the game (vs Libya).

“It is not just because he has a good left foot. He has a good physique. He is quick, he can go forward and he is defensively strong.

“I saw him play for Paderborn when they beat Cologne 5-3 and he did very well.

“Two, three years ago, Paderborn were in the Bundesliga and they now want to come back (to the top flight). They have a really strong team.

“What I also saw of him before the Seychelles game was good, but he had a little injury, he wasn’t 100% to start the game.”

“He started the game in Monrovia against Liberia and he was good.”

However, Rohr admits that competition for the left-full-back position is open in the absence of Elderson Echiejile, who has yet to secure a new club.

Ola Aina and Bryan Idowu are the other left-back options available for Rohr.

The time will tell with your Ighalo. A good and sound coach should have realized at the world cup that Ighalo can’t be our main striker.

When Ighalo fail you again, you and him would leave us alone. Enough of striker defender or what can I call it.

Coach Rohr may convert Ighallo as a defender and switch another defender to his position. You lost it coach.

If you like win on Saturday no wahala.
    Nobody cares anymore. God bless!!!

Speak for yourself. I still care about what happens with the SE.

Hahahaha….u are afraid he will rub your face in the mud and win on saturday right..? You and all your baseless criticisms. Before…it was ‘it SE wins, you will thank God’…now it is “nobody cares”. Speak for urself pls.
In case u missed it….Olivier Giroud dint score 1 goal for france en-route winning the WC in Russia…guess what…he was still invited by deschamps and even started the friendly game they played last night and played the full game and will still be invited for future games…I guess Giroud is bribing Didier Deschamps too.

Shut it Dr Drey you think if Giroud plays like Ighalo and misses multiple sitters a good coach like Didier will invite him again? I dont like mediocre minds polluting brilliant brains

And so what if he scores goals in China. Those goals are fake, man! Don’t really understand what is BTW u and this guy. You have tried him several times, given him the benefit of the doubt several times, but he has failed to deliver. what else are u trying to prove by his invitation? This guy would lead to your imminent and disgraceful sack if u do not end this senseless romance with him.

  • I’m both bother about his invitation. He should please replace him fast as soon as he start displaying his unserious act in front of goals.

It’s good if Jamilu Collins can start in the left back position. Leaving Aina and Shehu to fight for the right back spot. Omeruo can also play that position so we should be good in the fullback/wingback positions. I’m only concern about Ighalo, I’ll prefer Success or Onyekuru ahead of him. Chinese clubs don’t invest in defenders that’s why he’s able to score that many goals. If he can’t score on a consistent basis for the SuperEagles we don’t need such a striker abeg.

Exactly what own goal Nigeria stated that Chinese clubs pay less attention to defense

Come on Coach, Ighalo will not lead you and this Nigerian Team to the promise land. A draw here at home and/or at away will send Nigeria out of Cameroon in 2019. Why are you taking a risk on Ighalo ? Millions of Nigerians will never understand why this coach is taking a bet on Ighalo who is most likely to fire blank whenever he plays for Nigeria.

A draw in either leg will not eliminate Nigeria as 2 teams from each group qualify. 4 points would be enough although i am expecting 6. I expect us to win the remaining matches to top the group and either South Afica or Libya qualify in second place.

Ighalo is average in qualifiers but terrible in competitions.
Against Seychelles he scored a penalty and gave an assist so for that the coach reckoned he did well enough to carry on to the next game.Hopefully now we have Success Isaac breathing down his neck apparently he knows he has competition so that would bring the beast in him.
Having said that,Ighalo has disappointed us consistently right from his youth days but always get back to the team by playing well at club level. If I were him I will quit international football but he won’t.Tough.
I think the only way Ighalo can be eased out of the team is for Success to take his chances and another quality striker coming into the team otherwise this romance with Ighalo would carry on.
    God bless Nigeria!

  • Has anyone ever watched “The matrix”?
Rohr is Morpheus and Ighalo is Neo. Despite what everyone thinks, Rohr believes that Ighalo is “the one”.

Rohr, like Morpheus, believes this so much that he is willing to risk his life (career) to provide it – just like Morpheus did in the movie.

As it so happens, Neo (Ighalo) turns out to actually be “the one” and Morpheus is saved from the agents.

I hope it will turn out like that in this case.

Neo was awesome in “the matrix” . I hope Ighalo turns out to be awesome for Nigeria eventually!!!

  • By singling out Ighalo and giving explanations for his invitation, GR has acknowledged that he is listening to the cries of the SE fans. I’m sure the NFF is well aware, also. I don’t think fans hate Ighalo as a person. The big issue is his persistent poor performance in the SE colours. (Forget about goals in China: no defenders, no goalkeepers). Does Rohr review our post-match videos? In Russia Ighalo blew away 3 clear-cut chances. Is that not enough to send him out of the national team? How many opportunities must a single player be given when the nation is teeming with talented players right and left who can’t even be given a single opportunity.
Is playing for the SE his birthright?
I foresee this low-key protest from fans snowballing into an IGHALO-ROHR MUST GO movement in the very near future.

    NGR vs LYB

    4-2-4 team play formation !!

This 4-2-4 is Nigerian strongest formation based on the immense talents at SE disposal.

    During the game; this formation allows a team to ;
Play the 4-2-3-1 (defence in our half)
Play the 3-2-2-3 (attack on the flanks)
    Play the 3-5-2 (counter attack)

    The players (actors) should include;
    – Uzoho
    – Shehu/Ola – Leon – Ekong – Collins
    – Ogu – Ndidi
    – Kelechi – Iwobi – Success – Musa

Subs (must be done in a timely manner)
    – Etebo (attack oriented) if the goals has not yet come
    – Onazi (Defence oriented) if goals are scored and we have to defend the 3 points
    – Kalu (Kelechi)
    – Simon (Musa)
    – Omeruo (Aina/Leon)

Just a suggestion of a die-hard citizen of a blessed Nation!

    ***God Bless Nigeria !!!**

    • Personally I’d start with

Musa Iwobi and Kalu attacking trio behind Success and a balance of Ndidi and Etebo in Midfield.

Subs Simon for Musa on the left, Onyekuru for Kalu on the right if we are looking for goals and Ogu/Omeruo for Etebo if we have to defend (convert back 4 to back 5 – hold wing backs behind the ball).

i understand Onazi got injured in training and may not play

      • BigD I usually try to keep away from squad selection conversation but purely for fun, I will select a fantasy starting lineup and formation.

4-5-1 is what I will go for on this occasion.

I will start Uzoho with shehu-Balogun-Ekong-Collins making up my backline.

I will go for a single defensive midfielder in Ndidi sat in front of my back 4.

I will have two wide-men who I will instruct to contract/cave in when on attack to help Ndidi out or help the full backs when needed. They will be stationed not far from the centre circle. These will be Moses S and Henry O.

Then, there will be 2 attacking midfielders close to the opponent’s 18 yard box in Iheanacho and Iwobi. Not much defending will be expected of these.

Musa will be the lone forward but will be expected to drop deep to collect ball to feet and feed either Iheanacho or Iwobi who will be expected to make runs into the box 18 at will.

sub: Success will come in for Musa in 60 minutes; Kalu for Moses in 70 minutes and Onazi for Ndidi in 80 minutes.

oga prince i no understand all this ur analysis oo
and to the other guy comparing giroud with ighalo, France has potential goal scorers. giroud is only there to cause nuisance and press high, France don’t go with a lone striker…. BUT in this case ighalo is given the task to score, Samuel kalu is there to cause nuisance besides ighalo isn’t sharp…. i guess age is catching up with him
