Nigeria’s Segun Toriola and Funke Oshonaike have qualified for the final of the mixed doubles event at the ongoing 2018 ITTF-African Championships in Port Louis, Mauritius, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The Nigerian veterans defeated the pair of El-Beiali Mohamed and Abdel Aziz Farah of Egypt 4-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-9, 11-7) in the semi-final.
They will face Ahmed Saleh and Dina Meshref of Egypt in the final later today (Friday).
Toriola and Oshonaike had ousted Sami Kherouf and loghraibi Lynda Algeria in the quarter-final 4-1 (11-9, 5-11, 11-9,11-9, 11-6) after their 3-0 win over Congo’s Nzangani Kidoda and Jonathan Bizaku by 3-0 (11-5, 11-7,11-8) in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Aruna Quadri will start his campaign in the men’s singles event from today’s Second Round (round of 32) after getting a bye from the First Round. Quadri is in search of his first ITTF-African Championships men’s singles title.
Toriola and Oshonaike who were also seeded in the draw for the mens and women’s singles are in search of their third and fourth African title respectively
Toriola won the men’s singles title in 2002 and in 1998 while the women’s singles defending champion, Oshonaike trimphed in 2017, 2002 and 1992.
The sum of $25,000 prize money has been set aside for the last four players in the remaining five events.
