2026 WCQ: Obasogie Replaces Okoye For Lesotho, Zimbabwe Games

Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie will take the place of Maduka Okoye in Super Eagles’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Okoye pulled out of the games against the Likuena and Warriors on Monday.

The Super Eagles technical crew moved quickly by drafting in Obasogie to take his place.

The 23-year-old is currently rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The shot stopper was pivotal to Bendel Insurance’s Federation Cup success last season.

Obasogie also cut eye after saving two spot kicks in the Benin Arsenals’ CAF Confederation Cup win against ASO Chlef of Algeria in August.

He is expected to arrive the Super Eagles Four Points Hotel camp on Tuesday.

Obasogie is a decent goalie if we are to judge by his caf matches. If the gaffer is honest he can surprise us by making decisions based on performances in training and leave names aside.

Y did okoye withdrew .. with his performance in last game against caligari I thought we are going to see a change in poll ..
Pls someone new needed to be in goal against Lesotho.. even though the eagles wil win . with 5 goals but we don’t want to concede 2 goals again with Lesotho .we need someone that let the 5 goals stand .

Imagine okoye withdrawing after giving such a rare opportunity..

Will he say he is injured or what is his excuse.. this guy was someone who had a golden chance to play as the no1 for the super eagles but he began arriving late for games and picking games to play for the super eagles..

Pls if he is not serious with the team , he should be dropped permanently for others.. why ignore a saheed in Sweden who plays regularly and is willing to play for Nigeria..

Only players who want to play for Nigeria should be invited! No player is bigger than the team

  • Our goalkeeping situation hasn’t been good for the longest time. Yes, even before a ball was kicked in earnest in our Nations Cup qualifying group. I had believed that it would be better to use the games against the likes of São Tomé to try out some players, especially in the goalkeeping department.
The counter suggestion was that no sane coach would do that in a competitive match. That it would be too risky.
Well, how about the last two exhibition games? Didn’t happen, either.
If it is to happen in the next two crucial World Cup qualifying games, would it be any less risky?

The guy go displace uzoho, amas is insurance skipo, he carreys alot of confidents and courage, very difficult to beat, Good penalty stopper and also good in dead balls and range shots, I believe he will start against Lesotho, a true replical of vicent Enyeama, the coach will be impressed by his abilities, he have the capacity to snash afcon number one spot with this chance, congratulations to npfl, every npfl skipo have always done well for eagles when given the chance,eg: Enyeama Enyimba skipo, Oboboana sunshine skipo, sunday mba Enyimba skipo, Ezenwa Enyimba skipo, Etebo Worry wolves skipo, etc captains can hardly fuck up bcos of the leadership responsibilty in them, i hope it works with Amas.

Okoye did the right thing in my opinion. My only problem is he should have let the coaches know before his invitation.
He is trying to rebuild his career/confidence. And only recently managed to get game time against cagliari. So he is only just being honest to accept this isn’t the best time to be thrown into the deep end of international matches especially for a country like Nigeria, whose fans care less about how damaging their negative criticism can be on players.
Uzoho should have done the same because he us most likely gonna struggle psychologically. This whole thing about goal keeper invitation is where Peseiro is getting it really really wrong. He d better listen to advice or will soon become a pauper in a land where he has everything to become King.

You’re right about Okoye he should have signaled the gaffer so that the invitation be sent to Saheed in Sweden. Now we have to make do with Obasogie but that one is not bad.

Thank you Okoye for not trading your patriotism for selfishness. For this action, you have earned my respect and i shall desist from calling you Okoyoerror as from this moment. I pray your career gets better in due course. You owe no one no apology because the coaching crew never believed in you and even refused to use you in a friendly match. I feel your pain because according to a report you performed really well in the match practice. You were shocked to sit on a bench for a GK that drag a feeble freekick into his net, a Gk that allowed a feeble shot through his tototolo legs, a GK that was busy looking for grasshopper while a weak ball rolled on a grass into his net, a Gk that is not reliable when it comes to late chances thrice he has conceded late goals at 3 different times. No wonder he was the third keeper at U-17.
The coach is left with Uzohobasket that disappointed his club by conceeding two goals despite coming in to replace the first team goal keeper in second half when the score was at nil nil.
Well, i dont foresee much dangers at the moment because of the level of opposition. Fingers crossed
