26 Years After: Esin Pays Respect To Okwaraji

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

On Saturday, August 12, 1989 at the Lagos National Stadium, Nigeria lost a football hero, midfielder Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, who slumped and died on the pitch during Nigeria’s 1990 World Cup qualifier against Angola.

The demise of Okwaraji has always brought a feeling of sadness to his then team-mates, friends, relatives and fans.

One of his former team-mates in the Super Eagles and friend, Etim Esin has once again expressed grief at Okwaraji’s death despite it being 26 years on Wednesday, since his journey to the great beyond.

Esin on his Twitter handle wrote: “Respect to my late friend, Sam Okwaraji. RIP bro, your soul is blessed. #Onelove”

All medical efforts to revive Okwaraji after the incident proved futile.

Former Super Eagles star Esin has repeatedly told Completesportsnigeria.com that the Federal Government have not done enough to immortalise the Orlu-born star.
