Nigerian wrestling team to the just concluded Spanish Wrestling Grand Prix are expected back in Lagos on Tuesday after participating in the three-day tourney which attracted 54 countries.
The team led by Daniel Igali, the wrestling federation president, won three medals in the championships which served as one of the tune-up competitions before the Olympic games
In the 58 kg female event, Aminat Adeniyi gave a good account of herself by picking up a bronze medal. Adeniyi, a student of Adekunle Ajasin University, defeated Bulgaria’s Hristov by a pin fall and Sweden’s Mattson before making the podium.
Odunayo Adekuroye also defeated contestants from Russia and Argentina before winning a bronze medal.
Adekuroye, a Commonwealth games medallist, had to fight back from an initial setback after losing her first bout.
In the 63 kg category for women, Blessing Oborududu fought all the way to the final where she met a Belarusian opponent. Oborududu however lost out on countback after fighting her opponent to a standstill. The fight ended 1-1 but the gold eluded the Nigerian.
The three men on the team, Soso Tamaru (97kg) and Amas Daniel (65kg) did not make the podium.
Igali in his assessment praised the effort of the wrestlers while insisting there was room for improvement.
“This was a good test for the Olympics. I wish we had a few more tournaments like we had originally planned,” the Olympian said.
“Congratulations to all the young men and women for their tremendous effort. I wish them luck at the Olympic Games.”
