Following Cameroon's elimination in the group stage of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI highlight five significant points concerning their general showing which the Super Eagles must use to prepare for their forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Indomitable Lions in August.
1. PHYSICAL STYLE OF PLAY
If there is one unique attribute of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, it is their physical style of play which was on display at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
What the Indomitable Lions lack in skill and technique, they make up in their physical approach which was evident against theirGroup B opponents,; Germany, Chile and Australia at the competition.
Judging by past encounters, the Super Eagles have always been second best against the Cameroonians in that aspect of the game.
It would be wise for Super Eagles coach,Gernot Rohr
to come up with an antidote to the Indomitable Lions' steel and thunder style.
2. IMPRESSIVE AERIAL ABILITY
Due to the good height possessed by many of Cameroon players, one of the aspect of their game which the Super Eagles must take note of is their ariel abilities.
Unfortunately for Cameroon, they came up against well drilled teams at the 2017 Confederations Cup who were organised when it comes to warding off aerial threats.
But that did not stop them from occasionally causing problems for their group opponents.
The question is, how good are players of the Super Eagles when it comes to defending aerial threats? Against South Africa, it was a 1.72 m tall player, Tokelo Rantie who had the better of the Eagles central defensive pairings of Chidozie Awaziem and William Troost-Ekong, to open the scoring in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on June 10.
3. INDOMITABLE LIONS LACK SPEED
The Super Eagles must take seriously, the issue of deploying very fast players against Cameroon.
This was one area teams like Germany and Chile capitalised on to subdue Cameroon
despite their disadvantage in physique.
It is imperative that the coaching crew of the Super Eagles unleash very fast players especially against the full backs of the Cameroonians who are not good in terms of recovery after surging forward.
With the likes of Ahmed Moses, Victor Moses and Moses Simon, the Super Eagles have the necessary ammunition to cause havoc.
4. POOR SCORING RATIO
"If you have one (striker) in mind, please tell me his name and I'll go straight away and see him." That was the comment of Cameroon's coach Hugo Broos as regards his team's lack of a quality striker.
Cameroon crashed out of the 2017 Confederations Cup after only scoring two goals (conceding six goals), just only one better than the weakest team of the tournament, New Zealand.
The two goals they managed to score came in the 1-1 draw against Australia and 3-1 loss to Germany.
This should be good news to the Super Eagles because unlike the Cameroonians, the Super Eagles have players who can put away scoring chances.
5. POOR IN KEEPING POSSESSION
Against Germany and Chile, Cameroon's poor ball possession was well exposed.
The Indomitable Lions struggled to impose their brand of football due to the superior ball techniques of the world champions Germany, and South American champions, Chile. It was no surprise that it was in the games against this two sides that they lost.
This should serve as a blueprint for the Super Eagles who aside from being an explosive side, can also hold the ball. How To Migrate To Canada Without IELTS - A must read for anyone looking for a better life abroad"....
