Romelu Lukaku was on target again in the early hours of Friday as Manchester United claimed a 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the first-ever Manchester derby on foreign soil in Houston, Texas, United States.
Marcus Rashford also scored as United won their third straight pre-season match and their first in the International Champions Cup.
Jose Mourinho’s men started brightly as Ander Herrera tested new City keeper Ederson with long-range shots.
City, playing their first pre-season match, however grew into the game and made it a bright contest as David De Gea was forced into a save by Raheem Sterling and Chris Smalling made a fantastic double block from Patrick Roberts and Sterling again.
United opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Lukaku latched on to a Paul Pogba through ball, beat Ederson who was way out of his box, and finished brilliantly from a very tight angle for his second goal of pre-season. Two minutes later, Rashford, who scored twice against LA Galaxy, doubled the advantage, firing home after good work from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Both teams made a rash of changes in the second half and the intensity was taken out of the game but Lukaku still came close when he smashed a shot from the edge of the City box against the upright.
