7 Eagles Looking To Soar To Higher Heights With New Clubs

Completesportsnigeria.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU highlights seven Nigerian footballers who will be looking to make great impact after switching to new clubs this summer…

The 30-year-old centre-back joined English Premier League club, Brighton and Hove on a free transfer after running out his contract with German outfit FSV Mainz.

The injury prone defender made 14 league appearances for Mainz last season, and now faces a difficult task in earning a starting berth at his new club.

He will battle Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy for a starting berth in the team.

Henry Onyekuru joined English Premier League club, Everton from Belgian outfit, Eupen last season but he is yet to kick a ball for the club.

The young forward spent last season on loan at Anderlecht where he scored nine goals in 19 league appearances for the club.

His season was however cut short following a knee injury he picked in a league game last December.
He now has a chance to get started again with Galatasaray where he will spend the 2018/2019 campaign on loan.

Oghenekaro Etebo linked up with English Premier League club, Stoke City from Portuguese outfit, CD Feirense early in the summer.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at UD Las Palmas of Spain.

He was one of the top performers for Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Tyronne Ebuehi rose from the academy to earn a starting spot at Dutch side, ADO Den Haag. He also gained international recognition with Nigeria following his impressive showing for the modest club.

Portuguese giants, Benfica beat other top European teams to his signature in May.

This is no doubt a big career move for the young defender who now has the chance to prove his showing for ADO Den Haag was no fluke.

The forward made a name for himself as a youth international and is expected to break into the main Super Eagles team in future.

There were reports that he is highly rated by Liverpool who gave him a new contract last week but he will spend the season on loan at Belgian club, KAA Gent.

He made 27 league appearances and netted seven times during his loan spell with Royal Mouscron last season

The defender few weeks ago swapped Amkar Perm for another Russian team Lokomotiv Moscow. With the chance to feature in the Champions League, the Nigerian now have a bigger platform to showcase his talent and further cement a place in the Super Eagles after making the squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

After an impressive showing for Austria Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga, Kayode Olanrewaju made a big move to English Premier League champions, Manchester City.

He was immediately loaned out to Spanish club, Sporting Girona where he struggled to earn a starting spot.

The loan was ended prematurely in January and he later moved to Ukrainian club, Shakhtar Donetsk where he bagged three goals and one assist in eight appearances.
The move was later made permanent after he penned a five-year contract.

    **As they continue their progression**

  • These players face opportunities and threats in their new clubs. How they take full advantage of opportunities whilst mitigating the threats they face will have a bearing on how successful a season each one will have.

B: if the 30 year old fails to quickly adapt to the pace of the Premier League, he may find his starting position in Brighton in jeopardy.

Expect the pace of players like Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford, Ahmed Musa and Raheem Sterling to put Balogun’defensive capabilities to the test.

O: He will be hoping to walk straight into to starting eleven of Galastasaray.

The Turkish giants will demand high quality consistent performance from their forwards and their fans can be quite demanding as well.

E: it is no secret the Stoke City wants to gain instant promotion back to the Premier League. They also want to make impacts in Cup competitions featuring Premier League clubs.

They will look to their ‘high profile’ signing Etebo to pull the strings from the middle to create (lots of) goal scoring opportunities and to bang in the goals himself.

E: big games beckon for the youngster. Nobody would like to read that he has been relegated to their ‘b’ team (or loaned out to a team in Turkey) in the coming months .

Should he get game time and perform to the standards expected, then his status as a high quality (much sought-after) left-back will be secured.

A: not a stranger to the Belgian league, it will be interesting to see the number of games that Taiwo will start as a starter.

Competition for places in Gent is fierce but should he take advantage of the chances that come his way, then that will demonstrate another aspect to his potentials.

I: he hasn’t actually convinced many Super Eagles fans that he is a full/wing back of the highest quality.

The sort of demands and expectations that playing for a top club will place on him will reveal more about how far his skills can take him.

K: I don’t expect him to have difficulties speeding behind defences of teams in the Ukrainian league. His has demonstrated an aptitude to be able to hoodwink such Defenders with his skills.

With higher quality oppositions in Spain, those defenders were not hoodwinked easily as he scored 0 goals in the Spanish la liga.

It would be interesting to see whether he has learnt a thing or two when he faces such defenders in Uefa competition.

      O, Onyerkuru.
      A, Awoniyi.
      I, Idowu.
      K, Kayode.
