By Sab Osuji In Brazzaville:
Congo Brazzaville were hugely rewarded for their investment in Chinese-born table tennis on Wednesday night after the 11th All Africa Games hosts claimed both gold medals in the men and women’s doubles events.
Congo Brazzaville eliminated Nigeria in the women’s semi-final before going ahead to humble Egypt in the final.
Having won the mixed doubles days earlier with the duo of Wang Jinan and Yuheng Li, Congo’s double gold medal sweep Wednesday confirmed them as clearly an emerging force in the continent’s table tennis.
Congo Brazzaville thus increased their gold medal haul in ping pong to three after claiming the men and women’s doubles events.
In the thrilling finals, Han Xing and Li defeated Egypt’s duo of Dina Meshref and Nadeen El-Dawlatly 3-2 while the hosts’ pair of Hu Bin and Wang Jinan defeated their Nigerian-born Congolese compatriots, Saheed Idowu and Saka Suraju, 3-1 to claim gold for the home team.
“I am so happy and I am sure I can sleep very well tonight. Having played against top teams from the quarterfinal stage to the final was not that easy. It was a very difficult match and I am happy that I am picking my second gold medal at the African Games.
“I am now relaxed to play in the singles as I am not familiar with some of the top players in this competition,” an elated Li told completesportsnigeria.com.
Completesportsnigeria.com reports that of the five events so far concluded, Congo Brazzaville have won three gold medals while Nigeria and Egypt have one gold each.
