Abuja Set To Host Super Eagles Vs Congo Friendly For Buhari

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

There are strong indications that the farewell pre-World Cup friendly match between the Super Eagles and their DR Congo may now hold in Abuja instead of Uyo or Port Harcourt, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Sports ministry sources told Complete Sports in Abuja that the Federal Government is keen to have the game played at the Abuja National Stadium to enable President Mohammed Buhari to grace the occasion and send off the team to the World Cup in Russia.

Consequently, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation were at the Abuja National Stadium on Monday to inspect the pitch of the main bowl to ascertain its readiness or otherwise to host the game on May 28.

“The minister of sports has directed that the Abuja National Stadium should to put in shape for the Nigeria and DR Congo friendly match. We are putting everything possible in place to ensure that the turf is ready on time. As you can see, the pitch is now lush green, safe for some few patches which we are working on,” the ministry official told CSN.

“We are putting in every effort to ensure that the pitch is put in good condition to be to host the Eagles versus DR Congo match. The Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr was also here to inspect the pitch and he is more favourable to playing here from the way he spoke.”

The Super Eagles will face England at Wembley on June 2 and Czech Republic few days later after the DR Congo friendly.

Nigeria will be in the same Russia 2018 World Cup group with Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

A pity that since the NFA was formed in 1945, Nigeria has not had international standard grass pitches. This is of course a memento of our poor maintenance culture, despite the fact that Nigeria has research institutes in horticulture, agriculture and forestry, where groundsmen could be trained. We have now read and heard about 3 venues for the game against Congo in the last 2 weeks – Uyo, then Port Harcourt, and now Abuja. It is important that injuries to players do not result from playing on an uneven surface in that May 28th game, even if I understand the need for the FCT to “host” it.

Yeah!! Let them bring it to Abuja oo. We are waiting seriously for that moment to be at the National Stadium once again.

  • Why you na won course our there super eagles?
Buhari is not a sports or soccer fan .
The first under 16 world cup was won under his first coming, it his second coming over 30 years after to be convinced that the poor boys who conquered the world deserves some recognition and some naira and kobo.
CAN, please in the name of God and Allah, leave politicians out of our sports.
Why are the SE not coming for the Abuja fans?
Will only Buhari be in the stadium?
CAN he cheat more than every other person?
Does he even visit this site?
Abeg egboo Mumuni Alao, respect the sensitivity of your followers here.
    Up super eagles!
    Shame to Nigerian politicians.

Must the match be played in Abuja for the President to grace it and send the players off? He is the president of Nigeria. So, if the match is played in Uyo or Port Harcourt, won’t he watch it if he wants to? Is it not a matter of jumping into one jet in the presidential fleet to the venue and going back to Abuja immediately after the match. If the president can travel to the UK and the US why can’t he travel to Uyo or PH or any other part of Nigeria?

  • You guy has started again win it for Buhari this it will be worst

This is good thoughts. The national team should be playing in the capital. It is like that all over the world except if the national stadium is undergoing renovation or something. If I can remember the last picture I saw of that Abuja stadium it was in a disgraceful state. This latest developments means that it is now in a good state to host an important match with important personalities attending. Then it is good news. But if it is still in that bad shape, I will advice against using it. Our boys can be injured, meaning we shot ourselves in the leg. We don’t want that, do we? I believe Super Sport will show it live. These South Africans like disgracing us. If that stadium is in a bad shape, they will spend 45 minutes focusing on the very bad spots on the field. So Amaju Pinnick and Co should know what they are doing o.
