Former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, believes that Saturday’s 2-1 friendly defeat to England was a wakeup call to the team ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Gernot Rohr’s men put up an abysmal display in the first half and went behind through goals from Gary Cahill and Harry Kane.
The three-time African champions improved after the break and reduced the deficit following a strike by Arsenal winger, Alex Iwobi, poking home a rebound from Odion Ighalo’s effort.
Adepoju, who represented Nigeria at three World Cups also played down the defeat to the Three Lions and insisted the Super Eagles will learn from the experience and perform better in Russia.
“This game against England is an eye-opener because I feel it has exposed Gernot Rohr to some key areas that need a shakeup. The result in Russia counts more than the defeat to England @NGSuperEagles #SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong,” Adepoju tweeted on his Twitter handle after the game.
The Super Eagles will face Czech Republic in their next friendly game on Wednesday in Austria.
