Adepoju: No Cause For Alarm For Super Eagles, We Also Lost Friendlies Pre-USA ’94

Adepoju: No Cause For Alarm For Super Eagles, We Also Lost Friendlies Pre-USA ’94

By James Agberebi:

Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has played down the Super Eagles’ 1-0 defeat to Czech Republic on Wednesday which was their final warm-up game before heading to Russia for this summer’s World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

A first half goal from Tomas Kalas saw the Super Eagles suffer back-to-back defeats following their 2-1 loss to England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat means the Super Eagles lost three of their five friendly games, winning one and drawing one.

“There is no cause for alarm, we all know the essence of friendly games is to know how prepared a team is going into a tournament,” Adepoju who represented  Nigeria at three World Cups (USA 1994, France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002) told CSN moments after the match.

“So far, they have played against quality opposition who I believe would have given the coach an idea of where his team needs to improve on.

“When we were preparing for the USA 1994 World Cup, we lost some friendly games. Even during preparations for France 1998, we lost most of our friendlies.

“I believe we will see a different team when the World Cup proper starts, I am confident of that.”

The Super Eagles next game will be against Croatia on June 16 in their Group D opener at the World Cup.

How many games Brazil, France. England, Spain and others lost during this preparatory period. I understand where you are coming from. A winning mentality is more enduring though.

@Edoman, why don’t those countries you call play themselves if one of them will not loss. They will play inferior team since they are the best. Nigeria player quality matches and this will equip us well.

I agree with you. Argentina played with Spain and they lost 6-1. They later played with ordinary Haiti and they were celebrating of victory. Nigeria played with good opponents. Our losses could be blessing in disguise.

  • This team is going no way. Mr. Rohr can not bring out the best from his players. His formation and tactics is not ok. Why must this team lost in the 1st half? Yet we keep on saying the error will be corrected. When?

Please stop using shehu,he don’t deserve a place in that team.

  • Mark my words Nigeria will performe very well in russia, this will give us advantage but other teams will try to underrate us. To me ooo I prefer it this way than us winning

Hey, guys come on!, friendly matches are not tournament proper, it’s to assert teams, to see your team faults so as to correct them before proper tournament. I hate to see my darling super eagles loose but I also love it bcos it shows that some areas and tactics in super eagles needs to be corrected. And also don’t forget that some tactics in field of play favours some certain players and don’t favour some, let’s just calm down and wait to see what becomes our super eagles at the tournament. I believe in our coach and the present players now in the team. Let’s all support the team.

  • It’s even good dat SE lost De matches for them to work more on themselves and improve.if they won, they would have relaxed without need to improve.secondly every player makes mistakes and sometimes don’t give his best in some matches but dat does not mean dat he should be thrown away. Encourage our players.akpeyi was nervous and make mistakes in two matches, everyone started discouraging him while he is one of the best keepers we should have encouraged and build up. Mikel didn’t as he used to at Czech match and everyone is shouting.
