AFCON Qualifiers: Rwanda Appeal For August 27
By Izuchukwu Okosi:
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board will meet on Wednesday, 27 August 2014 in Cairo, Egypt on the case by the Fédération Rwandaise de Football Association (FERWAFA) over their disqualification from the Orange Africa Cup of Nations – Morocco 2015 qualifiers reports www.cafonline.com
The Organizing Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, 17 August 2014, declared Rwanda losers of Match No. 37 against Congo on 20 July 2014 in Pointe-Noire, for fielding an ineligible player – Etakiama Agiti Tady/Daddy Birori, who has Rwandaese and DR Congo nationalities but with different date of births.
Rwanda was billed to play against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Calabar on September 6. Nigeria had been given the nod to host first leg despite fears over the Ebola virus.
Congo was subsequently consigned to Group A as replacement for Rwanda, joining Nigeria, South Africa and Sudan for the final phase of the qualifiers.
Recently Lesotho failed to honour their 2015 African U-20 Youth Championship qualifier against the Flying Eagles of Nigeria which saw the Nigerian side qualifying for the Championship to be held in Senegal March 2015.
Meanwhile Congo DR are hoping that the qualifier against the Super Eagles who are hoping to defend their African Cup of Nations title won in 2013 in South Africa be played on a neutral venue-due to the outbreak of the dreaded Ebola disease in Nigeria.
