African Team Of The Week: Musa, Edomwonyi Lead Attack; Salah, Iwobi Hold Midfield

Following the commanding performances by African stars around Europe last weekend, Completesportsnigeria.com's IZUCHUKWU OKOSI presents the African Team of the Week comprising those great performers that helped their clubs to victories and also those that displayed individual performances worthy of commendation.


Charles Hubert Itandje (Rizespor, Turkey)
Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Hubert Itandje put up a wonderful performance in Rizespor's 1-1 away draw against Galatasary on Saturday.

The veteran keeper was dominant in the Rizespor box especially as he dealt with crosses from Galatasary wide players. He claimed one aerial duel against the opponents and touched the ball 43 times. He  made two key saves.  



Assou Ekotto (Saint Etienne, France)
Cameroon international Assou Ekotto was impressive in Saint Etienne's 1-0 home win against Troyes on Saturday. The former QPR left-back made three tackles and two interceptions in the match. Ekotto completed 58 of his passes and played eight balls into the opposition half. 

Joel Matip (Schalke, Germany)
Indomitable Lions of Cameroon defender Joel Matip was splendid in Schalke's 2-2 draw at home against Borussia Dortmund at the Veltins Arena on Saturday. 

The central defender who has a pre contract agreement with Liverpool made two tackles, four interceptions and nine clearances. The defender blocked two shots and committed two fouls in the derby.               

Matip however slots in the right back position for the African Team of the Week. 

Zargo Toure (Lorient, France)
Senegalese central defender Zargo Toure made three defensive tackles, four interceptions and seven clearances in Lorient's 2-1 away win against Caen over the weekend. The game was Toure's 27th appearance in the Ligue 1 this season.

Serge Akakpo (Trabzonspor, Turkey)
Togolese international Serge Akakpo was the Man-of-the Match in Trabzonspor's 1-1 home draw against Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

The central defender scored his team's goal in the 37th minute. He made two tackles, six interceptions and three clearances. 

The defender took no prisoners as he blocked two shots and committed one foul. 


Victor Wanyama (Southampton, England)
Kenya international Victor Wanyama was one of the best Southampton players in action over the weekend in their 3-1 win against Newcastle United who are in danger of being relegated. 

Wanyama finished off a rebound after a good work down the right wing by Senegalese forward Sadio Mane in the 55th minute. 

The midfielder's aerial dominance was evident as he won two duels. He also made one key pass and completed 52 passes. Wanyama made three defensive contributions in the game; winning two tackles and making one clearance. 

Riyad Mahrez (Leicester, England)
Algeria international, Riyad Mahrez, had 47 touches of the ball in Leicester City's 2-0 win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. 

Mahrez made one key pass, won one aerial duel and completed 25 of his passes (64%). The midfielder even put in a defensive shift in the game as he made two tackles. 

Mohamed Salah (AS Roma, Italy)
Egypt forward Mohamed Salah was the Man-of-the Match in AS Roma's 1-1 draw against Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico on Monday night in a 1-1 draw.

The 'Egyptian Messi' equalised for the Gialorrosi in the 50th minute, rolling the ball sweetly beyond the reach of goalkeeper Mirante with an assist from Francesco Totti after Luca Rosettini had headed Bologna into the lead in the 25th minute. 

Salah's speed during the game was recorded at 32.92. Two of his six shots on goal were on target. He made one key pass, won one aerial duel and touched the ball 60 times. He had 36 pass completion (63.9) and made six crosses. 

Alex Iwobi (Arsenal, England)
Super Eagles of Nigeria's new kid on the block Alex Iwobi completed more take-ons than any other player on the pitch (four attempts) in Arsenal's 3-3 away draw against West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday.

Iwobi also made 100% record dribbling in only his eighth Premier League appearance and third start for the Gunners. He assisted the first two Arsenal goals scored by Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in the first half. 

The Nigerian completed 84% of his passes in the match.


Ahmed Musa (CSKA Moscow, Russia)
Super Eagles of Nigeria winger Ahmed Musa was in blistering form as CSKA Moscow blew away hapless Mordovia Saransk 7-1 at the Arena Khimki Stadium on Saturday. 

Musa scored a 25th minute goal in the game which ended 5-0 in the first half.

Musa also assited Roman Emerenko and Alan Dzagoev's 76th and 78th minute goals. He had 35 touches of the ball and 23 pass completion. 

The former Kano Pillars forward was not the only Nigerian on parade as forward Aaron Samuel was a 56th minute substitute in place of Zoran Tosic. 

Bright Edomwonyi (Sturm Graz, Austria)
Nigeria's Bright Edomwonyi scored a hat-trick and provided one assist in Sturm Graz's 4-1 thumping of Rheindorf Altach in the Austrian Premier League on Saturday afternoon

The unheralded forward scored in the 20th, 89th and 90th minutes to take his goals tally to five in 21 Austrian Bundesliga matches this season.  

Incidentally Edomwonyi who was spotting jersey number 34 was also in action and yellow-carded when the two sides met in the corresponding fixture on August 9, 2015 which Sturm Graz won 1-0. 

He was yellow-carded in that game, his first of two bookings so far. 

The win at the UPC – Arena over the weekend saw Sturm Graz climb to 5th place in the table.
