By Kayode Ogundare:
MFM FC of Lagos own Stephen Odey and will receive the transfer fee if the striker's proposed move to Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland sails through, Completesportsnigeria.com has been informed.
Odey, 19, is the top scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League with 14 goals but has controversially ditched the club m8xway through the season to reportedly try out in Denmark. There are also claims that the striker is on loan at MFN.
Odey's representative Adewunmi Yusuf attempts to clear the air in an interview with Completesportsnigeria.com.
“Ordinarily there should be no controversy because this is a very straightforward issue but you know our people and their tendency to always play the spoiler,"Yusuf said on Wednesday. "I suspect all the brouhaha could be from guys that wanted to work with Stephen but who didn’t get the opportunity. Maybe this is their way of getting back by trying to bring him down.”
Adewunmi also categorically stated that there was no controversy as to the ownership of the player’s contract as it had never been a matter of dispute.
“Stephen is a bonafide player of MFM and nobody can deny the club anything that comes of his transfer because without MFM Stephen won’t be where he is today," he added. "I’m surprised at the news in circulation about whether the club is entitled to a share of his transfer fees. He has a valid contract with MFM and the club has the final say on when and where he goes. He cannot sign with another club without the consent of MFM, especially if they get a better offer for him somewhere else.
“The truth is Odey’s form, particularly this season, has been attracting lots of interest from European teams. FC Midtjylland were hoping to jump the queue so they decided to fast-track the invitation to him to come over. He got his travelling documents and went over. That in itself does not mean he has signed any deal with them. He cannot do that without the consent of his club.”
Odey is expected back in Nigeria by the weekend.
