As events unfold in Nigerian football, sl10.ng caught up with former Super Eagles goalkeeper Alloy Agu who spoke about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for 2015 AFCON and the current crop of goalkeepers.

Nigeria failed to win any of the two qualifying matches played so far in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, what are the chances of qualification now, with only a solitary point?

Thank you very much. I think we still have a very good chance of qualifying because we still have four games to go. It was disappointing that we didn’t get any win in those games but that doesn’t mean we won’t qualify. We will.

Given how strong the Congolese were for Nigeria in Calabar, do you really think Nigeria can beat them in their own backyard?

Why not? They came here and beat us and who says we cannot go there and beat them? Fine, they did their home work and were very good in Calabar, but if we do our homework well, we will also go there and beat them. They are not unbeatable, are they? Of course we can beat them there.

Why do you sound so confident? Did those games really inspire much confidence in you?

They probably didn’t but what did you expect? Those countries knew they were playing against the African champions and had to fight as hard as they did, it was understandable. Now, I’m sure the players understand this and will make up for it in the remaining games.

Do you think Austin Ejide should have done better in that game against Congo?

That would be unfair to blame him for any of those goals. He didn’t commit any blunder that resulted in any of the goals. It just wasn’t a very good day for the team and it’s easy to look for scapegoats.

What do you think of the current crop of goalkeepers in the team?

They are all very good goalkeepers. Vincent Enyeama showed it again at the World Cup and came out as one of the best ‘keepers in the tournament. Austin Ejide has shown that he is very capable whenever he gets his chance and Chigozie Agbim is also one of the best in the league. So, I think we are good in that department.

Some people think Chigozie Agbim shouldn’t be in the Super Eagles team. They say there are better goalkeepers in the league. Do you agree?

I agree there are good goalkeepers in the league but I don’t agree that Agbim doesn’t deserve to be in the team. I have worked with him and I know how good he is, he just needs time to break into the team. We can only have three goalkeepers for a competition and if the coaches feel he is the best of the lot, then so be it. He’s a very good goalkeeper who’s just highly underrated.

Thanks for your time

You’re welcome.

The super Eagles should be wake up , and put behind the success recorded during the recent world cup, and be focused because every team wants to be in the world cup or Africa representative. The problem of Nigeria is lack of preparation, and the approach of fire bridge is not good for the country. For example look at what is going on with NFF elections, where is sincerity. The contract of the coaching crews have not been approved. We have talented players in the country, let us invite good players to represent the country. The junior teams right from 1995 during the time of Uduka Ugbade have been doing well, and making the country to be proud all the time but the senior team should wake up to the task ahead of them. Let us have the spirit of forgiveness in this country so that things can be put in the rightful place. We are doing things as if we have no constitution at all. Nigerians will build this nation not a foreigners. Let us come together and reason, and see where we have made mistakes. Nigeria arise and shine again. The dry bones will come alive again. The peace, progress, prosperity, goodness, love will return to Nigeria. Amen and Amen
