Ahead Women’s W/Cup: Nigeria Coach Wants More Friendlies

Super Falcons Coach, Edwin Okon, has called for better preparations for the team ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The African champions have been training in Abuja and have played a number of friendlies against some local teams, but Okon insists they need better preparations to do well in Canada.

“For a competition like the World Cup, we need to play better friendly matches,” he said. “The anticipation and expectation we have is to do well in Canada but we need to play better and  bigger friendlies to whip us into shape” continues Okon.

“Of course we do appreciate the efforts of the Nigeria Football Federation because they have done a lot in ensuring we prepare well for this competition.

“However, if we can get games against some of these big countries, that will help us a lot. That will put our players into the competition mood,” he stated.

The team defeated a local side, Abuja All Stars, in one of the friendlies they  played.

They will also play Mali in a 2016 Olympic Games qualifier and they have remained in camp since beating the same team 9-1 on aggregate to qualify for the All Africa Games.

And Okon believes having such friendly games will also improve their chances of making the Olympics.

“The Olympic Games is also coming up and we cannot keep thinking of the win we got over them in the All Africa Games qualifier, because they’ll be different.

“If we could get these games, they will really go a long way and help us also build our confidence,” he added.
