By Johnny Edward:

Nigerian forward Adeleke Akinyemi scored his third league goal in the Norwegian Eliteserien division for IK Start who got relegated to the second division following their 3-1 loss away to FK Haugesund who had Izuchukwu Anthony on the bench for the entire duration of the game, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

It was Akinyemi’s 13th start of the season. His compatriot Aremu Afeez came on for Kasper Skaanes in the 87th minute of the defeat. Afeez made 25 appearances scoring three goals.

Akinyemi was replaced after an hour. IK Start finished 15th on the table with 29 points from 30 matches and were relegated along with bottom team Sandefjord.

Lillestrom, who paraded Nigeria midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew, survived the dreaded drop after they beat Kristiansund 2-0 on final day action. Matthew played the entire game, while Raphael Ayagwa was an unused sub. They finished 12th on the table with 32 points.

Super Eagles defender, William Troost Ekong helped his Italian club, Udinese end their seven-game winless streak in the Serie A with 1-0 win over AS Roma at the Dacia Arena on Saturday.

The game was Ekong’s 13th Serie A start of the season for Udinese.

In the English Championship, Oghenekaro Etebo was left out of Stoke City’s matchday squad that played out a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers that paraded Eberechi Eze for 89 minutes. Etebo has made 13 appearances for the Potters so far this season.

  • It is disheartening that Afeez and Akinyemi’s IK Start couldn’t beat the drop. I never liked the idea of Akinyemi joining IK Start after leaving his former club, Ventspil. He has proved to be a potent goal poacher in the little while he has hugged the limelight.I foresee him changing clubs soonest.
It is hightime the Super Eagles handlers gave the duo of Ifeanyi Mathew(Lillestrom) and Ebere Eze(QPR) a look-in to boost our midfield options. We need more legs in the midfield and these duo have proven their abilities over the years. Coach Gernot Rohr seems ambivalent towards trying out more legs in the midfield.Even the numerous times in the past when he would invite Uche Agbo to camp, he never played him. Uche Agbo appears another decent midfielder too.
Ebere Eze is an efficient attacking midfielder with guile and panache to his game.We should snatch him up now before loosing him to England especially if QPR get promoted to the EPL next season;England might come sniffing around.
Ifeanyi Mathew is an all-round midfield dynamo with pace and intensity. He can bring quite alot to the table.
Etebo comes around as an enigma these days. The fact he plays in a second-tier league hasn’t even guaranteed him a regular play time! I don’t think his mind lies in Stoke City. Could he be asking himself “what the heck have I done”? His decision to join Stoke City just at the eve of the last World Cup comes along as an impulsive one. If he plays in the championship just like Ebere Eze, isn’t getting enough play time while Eze does, but keeps getting call-ups to the National team, why hasn’t Eze been deemed fit for national assignment as well? (I’m just thinking out loud.)

Uncle Akin, your write up a lot.
Regarding enigmas, Etebo is not the only one.
Iheanacho is fast becoming the big enigma of the Super Eagles.
One minute he is brilliant, the next he is a bum! Still, he has something special about him.
As for Etebo, I think he is struggling big time to establish himself as a distinguished centre midfielder for club and country.
This is just a suggestion, perchance if the convert him to a winger or further forward right/left attacking midfielder,(like he played in the 2016 olympics) instead of an outright centre midfielder, that may unlock some of his more potent attributes.
To illustrate this, I share the link below.

  • Good right up apart from the case of  Uche Agbo. Rohr needed a defender cum midfielder and he tried Agbo. After world cup, he called Ajayi in his place and in Ajayi, we all see what Rohr wanted. Let’s wait..I heard his representatives are trying to meet Billing in England. .let’s hope for the best
