Akpeyi Hails Super Eagles Trainers, Vows To Reclaim Number-1 Shirt

By Johnny Edward

Daniel Akpeyi has hailed the influence of the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper trainers, Enrico Pionetti and Alloy Agu, as he tries to regain his place as the team’s number-one for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria. com reports.

The Chippa United goalkeeper, dropped down in the pecking other behind Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa following a below par performance against South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on November 14 2017 and against Argentina in an international friendly also in November last year.

The 29 year old shotstopper admitted he was left crestfallen by the demotion but vowed to regain the trust of the technical crew as they begin their preparation for the World Cup.

Zenith Ziva

“Everybody wants to play, but not all will get the chance. The goalkeeper trainers have been doing great to put us in shape and I believe in my qualities that I will fight back,” Akpeyi told CSN.

“We have had equal opportunities and I believe that I can reclaim my place, but the coach decides who plays.”

Akpeyi kept 11 clean sheets and conceded 18 goals in 25 games for Chippa United in the just concluded ABSA Premier Soccer League season in South Africa.

Continue… Orisirisi nsele ninu Super Eagles camp sha. How can he Akpeyi said he would reclaim is no1 shirt while he knew it koroko that he doesn’t deserves to be among the 30 men list? This Akpeyi guy is till dreaming few days to the world cup. Oh well, I don’t blame him at all but Mr. Rohr. The time Will tell. God bless Nigeria!!!

Not in the world cup I beg u Mr Daniel the keeper

  • A beg in the world cup

  • Daniel “the lion heart” Akpeyi… I remember the ratings that CNS gave you after the match against Egypt in 2016.

    This is, and I quote”DANIEL AKPEYI 7/10
Put up a brave performance in what was his first competitive game for the Super Eagles. Made two brilliant saves on 39 minutes and could do nothing to prevent the Pharaohs from scoring the winner.”

I still watch highlights of that match on YouTube and I have to say you were amazing!

Other media outlets sang your praises after that match and your penalty save against South Africa in a friendly is still fondly remembered in some quarters.

Unfortunately, you seem to bear the brunt of the critisms that came in the wake of Super Eagles’ defeat to South Africa in 2017 – the whole team player badly and coach Rohr got his tactics and team selection wrong on the day.

Your mis-reading of the lines-man signals against Argentina also did you no favours.

You are a decent goalkeeper and deserve more credits than has come your way.

All I will just say is, try to look more confident because the way you come across as a goalkeeper also matters.

I remember Peter Rufai coming out of the dugouts in the 90s and he would always look like a warrior ready for war- I like that.

Even Enyeama would also often had a No-nonsence look!

Whether you make the final 23 man squad (let alone be number 1), please know that there are fans out there who hold you in high esteem.

Thanks,Bro Deo.Its unfortunate Nigerians dont understand the “ACT” of goalkeeping. Thanks to God d coach is à white man.Nigerians would have alleged hé took bribe from Akpeyi. We also dont remember there is technical committee in d NFF.They would have mounted pressure on Rohr to drop him,if hé is an empty goalie! Iam scared some, who detest this young man, might commit suicide if hé keeps goal in Russia. We wish u,Dan,d very best.We pray for destiny to fulfilled,if u have been destined to wear d much Nigerian-critisized shirt number 1! Make sure you stay injury free! God bless u!

    • Oga Gbenga; I throwaway salute sir! More grease to your elbows, sir.

The way some of our great distinguished indigenous coaches have been accused of bribery, you will think this was something that was not endemic in our public life (I am not saying it is right)(Let him that has committed no sins cast the first stone!). The late coach Keshi came and said “we cannot continue to do the same thing the same way and expect to get a different result”. Hence he took a selection of hungry, determined and patriotic players (who admittedly are not overly to most technically gifted) to the world cup and all you hear are allegations of bribery; Nigeira reached the second round for the first time in 17 years with these so-called mediodre players. Indeed – like you said – if Mr Rohr was an indigenous coach, the allegations of bribery may have come his way for inviting professional footballers like Mikel Agu, Akpeyi and John Ogu.

  • I will stop beeing a super eagles fan,the day danial akpeiyi becomes no. 1 goalkeeper because basket cannot hold water.

Against DRC I will start Ajiboye in goal, but I believe GR will want to give more exposure to the kid so as to continue to boost is confidence ahead of the Mundial. Omeruo, Aina, Eze, Ebuehi will be my preferred back four to see who will be dropped. Agbo, Agu and Joel Obi can start in midfield to see who will measure up to standard. Nwankwo, Simon and Ighalo can sparehead the attack. My preferred 11 Ajiboye, Aina, Omeruo, Eze, Ebuehi, Agbo, Agu, Obi, Simon, Nwankwo, Ighalo. This will be a good line up to see who will make the final 23.

As for Akpeyi I think he’s a decent goalkeeper with lots of experience. Perhaps the most experienced among the the four goalies. However, his howler against SA and Argentina is costing him the number one spot. I don’t see GR dropping any of Uzoho and Ezenwa. Therefore, the battle for the third goalkeeper will be between him and Ajiboye. Ajiboye won the NPFL title last season with Plateu United. He was a WorldCup winner at U17 level where he was on par with now the best goalie in the world David De Gea. His heroics in the CHAN semifinal was phenomenal. For me he could be the number one goalie going to the Mundial if he’s given a chance against DRC, but I’m not sure if he’s that trusted. So I leave the 3 goalkeepers slots to Uzoho, Ezenwa and Akpeyi with Uzoho the numero uno at the Mundial proper.

Deo, u know u bi my guy, pls stop supporting mediocrity. Akpeyi lacks confidence, the guy is not ready for prime time. The guy failed has failed the leadership test many times.

    • My Sunny-Side-of-Life one and only only Bro SunnyB, I salute sir.

Let’s give Akpeyi another chance please please please!

I think he is more capable than he gives away.

I also acknowledge Aphylly-the-man’s comment about Ajiboye. I couldn’t fault any aspect of his write-up even if I spend a year trying….

  • Akpeyi is a great keeper. Just two mistakes. I wonder how people access players. Akpeyi is the best among them

  • Chima E Samuels 3 years ago

Akpeyi is not good enough for a team like SE because he lack proper positioning and sometimes concedes weird goals… hmmm people will cry when the reggae starts playing… Ajiboye, uzoho and Ezenwa can only be beaten by world class goals unlike the cheap misplaced kicks that will beat Daniel Akpeyi

  • Djeniko 3 years ago

Whether people like it or not, Akpeyi is the most experienced keeper among the lot. If he is bad at all Chippa fc would have dropped him long ago. And Daniel Akpeyi must go to the WC. Ajiboye and Ezenwa will be dropped.

No o,Olorun maje ,bros u can’t fit be our number one o…

  • Donbenie 3 years ago

The Man Akpeyi does not inspire confidence..for the sanity and cardiac well being of Nigerians, please and please let him take a permanent sit at the subs bench..

  • Sa Dave 3 years ago

Hey Guys, Do you know that Daniel Akpeyi is better than Ikechukwu Ezenwa!

  • Please please please, this is world cup, not a child play, you don’t train a soldier in the war front
Daniel is not good for world cup for now, that confident is not there, Ajeboye is the third best goalkeeper we have now, Ajeboye is very talented, he kept in the world cup before, and Nigeria won, he should be promoted to siniour level. If we are doing the right thing. let us tell ourselves the whole truth. God bless super eagle , our coach should be very careful Nigeria with ball., please I just bought gotv ,I want to watch football.

  • Omo9ja 3 years ago

Hmmm. Interesting lol. Akpeyi has wasted a lot of opportunities given to him before now.

Ah, second chance ke? If you guys have forgotten, I’m not. During the Olympics game, Siasia gave him a chance to man the post, what happened in the end?

He failed to impressed the coach and the coach refused to used him throughout the tournament.

So my people, Ajiboye is the right choice for the 3rd goalkeeper if they know what they are doing but they will drop Ajiboye for Akpeyi because they are very sentimental.

Therefore, A child who say him papa and mama no go sleep, the child himself will never fojukan orun.

    God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Bestsports. 3 years ago

We all want to see Ajiboye against congo DR because we want to observe him openly. Ajiboye was as well a European based goalkeeper too. Play him and he could become number one. Or finally drop him FOREVER. Musa Mohammed, kelechi and his brother and usman are worthy of invite in d real SENSE.
