Akpoborie Grateful To President Buhari For Financial Reward, Amapakabo Relishes Reunion

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Golden Eaglets and Super Eagles striker Jonathan Akpoborie has expressed gratitude to President Mohammadu Buhari for the reception in honour of the Golden Eaglets team that won the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Cup and other title-winning Nigerian sports teams.

President Buhari showered financial rewards on the Golden Eaglets team of 1985 which Akpoborie was a key member, the 2015 Eaglets that won the cadet World Cup for a fifth time.

Also rewarded were the men's basketball national team, D'Tigers, for winning a ticket to the 2016 Olympics-the first time Nigeria will qualify for the Games without going through play-offs, the All Africa Games medal winners and world scrabble champion, Wellington Jighere at a reception at the Conference Centre of the Presidential Villa, Abuja last week Thursday.

There has been different reactions that followed President Buhari's cash rewards with some of the beneficiaries believing that the prize monies were rather too little in the face of financial difficulties.

Akpoborie however in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning insists that he was satisfied with the president's cash reward of #2m to each of the players that did Nigeria and Africa when Buhari was Nigeria's military Head-of-State.

"It is not everytime you remember someone after 30 years. I want to thank Mr. President. Even if it is #2 that was given to us, bringing us together alone was priceless.

"I thank all Nigerians for this honour. God remains faithful," the former Hansa Rostock of Germany forward who scored one of the goals in the final of the U-16 World Cup in China where Nigeria defeated West Germany 2-0 wrote on his timeline.

One of the respondents to Akpoborie's post on the Comments column was his team-mate at the 1985 U-16 tournament, Imama Amapakabo.

"Moments with you guys is priceless. Thanks Mr. President for giving us this prize of a reunion," Amapakabo wrote on Tuesday.

On Monday former FIFA executive member Amos Adamu urged the sports stars to work towards more excellence at the Olympics following the Presidential rewards whilst speaking with Completesportsnigeria.com.
