Anglo Nigerian wonderkid Chuba Akpom scored a fine hat-trick for Arsenal under-21 in their 4-2 victory over West Brom in the under-21 Premier League on Thursday (August 28) night.
Akpom scored the first of his three goals 30 minutes into the game, finishing off on the rebound after a Semiu Ajayi strike was parried into his path to put Arsenal two goals up.
After the halftime break, the 18-year-old climbed high to head home a Bellerin cross for his second goal of the game and Arsenal’s third of the evening.
Akpom grabbed his hat-trick in an emphatic fashion finishing in between the legs of West Brom goalkeeper following a through ball from Joel Campbell.
West Brom later grabbed two late goals, but Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start to the Under-21 league by hanging on to win 4-2.
Akpom’s hat-trick has now taken his tally for the Arsenal Under-21 to 23 goals and he is tipped to be loaned out after Arsenal’s engagement in the Capital One Cup is over.
Meanwhile, former Flying Eagles defender, Semiu Ajayi whose future at Arsenal is still in doubt was on show for 90 minutes.
Alex Iwobi the other Nigerian with Arsenal under-21 wasn’t listed. Iwobi is nephew to former Super Eagles mercurial midfielder, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha.
Although Akpom has turned out for England at various youth levels, he is still eligible for Nigeria at senior level.
Former Arsenal youngster Chuks Aneke almost got an invitation to the Super Eagles but his hope of making a debut for Nigeria was dashed with the sacking of former national team coach, Samson Siasia, who exclusively told Completesportsnigeria.com of his plans to invite Aneke’s parents for talks over their son’s willingness to represent Nigeria.
