Cooreman replaces cup winner, Zachary Baraje, whose contract was not renewed by the Nigeria Professional Football League side.
Cooreman, who arrived in Nigeria in 1999 with spells at Nigerdock, Gabros International, Lobi Stars, Bendel Insurance, NPA Seasiders (now Warri Wolves), Kaduna United and recently Ikorodu United, was Monday on handed a two-year contract by Akwa United.
Chairman of the club, Nse Ukoh, had last week told Completesportsnigeria.com that the decision on who leads the club’s coaching crew going into the 2015/2016 season would be determined on Monday.
Baraje and Cooreman had been in the running for the plum job.
After a top management meeting on Monday, Uwem Ekoh, spokesman of Akwa United, confirmed Cooreman has been named officially as new technical adviser of the club.
“This is official, Maurice Cooreman has been confirmed as the new Technical Adviser of Akwa United”, Ekoh told completesportsnigeria.com exclusively.
“His contract will run for two years.”
He added that Baraje has similarly been paid his last salary.
“Even as we speak, he, Baraje was in Uyo and has been paid his December salary.
“You know his contract with us will expire at the end of this December,” Ekoh explained.
Completesportsnigeria.com tried to reach coach Baraje on his mobile phone but none of our calls went through as at the time of filing this report.
