Nigeria forward, Junior Ajayi, has been excluded from Egyptian club, Al Ahly 33-man squad for the 2018/2019 season, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Ajayi, a key member of the team copped a knee injury in the club’s CAF Champions League Group A clash against Botswana’s Township Rollers last Saturday and is expected to be out of action for four months.
He played a key role as the Red Devils won the Egyptian League title last season and also made it to to the final of the CAF Champions League where they lost to Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca in the final.
The injury will also affect his chances of fighting for a place in the Super Eagles ahead of the qualifiers for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations which will resume in September.
He earned his first call-up to the Super Eagles for the pre-World Cup friendlies against Poland and Czech Republic in March.
In Ajayi’s absence, South African striker Phakamani Mahlambi has been handed a place in the team.
Rami Rabia was also not named in the squad due to an injury, which also requires a long period of treatment like Ajayi.
Al Ahly are set to participate in the Egyptian Premier League, CAF Champions League, Egypt Cup, Arab Club Champions Cup, and Egypt Super Cup this term.
