Ali Targets Test Return With England

Moeen Ali is hoping his recent form with Worcestershire can help him earn a recall to the England Test team. The all-rounder underlined his credentials in the longest form of the game by hitting a double century (219) in his county’s recent win over Yorkshire at Scarborough, a match that also saw him post bowling figures of 8-89.

Ali has retained his place in England’s squad for the fourth Test against India next week but he is yet to feature in the series, with his last appearance in the five-day game coming against New Zealand in March.

The 31-year-old could find a place in the team for next week’s Test at the Ageas Bowl as Jonny Bairstow is struggling with a fractured finger although he knows it will be easier said than done, with England currently leading the five-match series 2-1.

“We’ll see, we are winning 2-1 and playing quite well. I know we lost the last game but I feel like we have played quite well in the Test matches,” Ali said. “If I get the nod it will be great, if not then not a problem.

“I don’t take anything for granted. I’m just trying to stay in the present at the moment. I’m playing well and I just want to keep up the form with Worcestershire and hopefully with England as well.”

Even if Ali is overlooked for the fourth Test he remains upbeat about forcing his way back into the team in the future, as long as he can retain his good form for Worcestershire.

“For me it’s about preparing to play and if I don’t get the call then obviously I will have to go and play county cricket,” he added. “I will try to improve and get better in the nets.”
