McLaren star Fernando Alonso says he treats every race now as a “celebration” as he prepares to say farewell to Formula 1. The two-time world champion has opted to leave the sport at the end of the season after 17 seasons as a Formula 1 driver.

The 37-year-old is not quitting motorsport altogether, however, and is expected to contest the Indianapolis 500 again in order to complete the ‘Triple Crown’ – having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota Gazoo this year to go with his two Monaco GP victories.

The Spanish star has endured a tough four-year spell with McLaren and has been unable to claim a single podium finish since rejoining the team in 2014.

Despite McLaren’s performance problems, Alonso says he is enjoying his final grands prix in Formula 1 and he is looking forward to the next race in the USA.

“Every race now, from the moment I decided to stop, is just a celebration,” said Alonso, as reported by Motorsport.
“I can’t wait to go to Austin now and see the place again, drive around in the cars.

“Maybe we’re not the fastest when you see the times at the end of the session, but every lap feels fantastic.
“It’s not that I don’t love F1 anymore, I still love these cars, but if I stop now it’s because I’m 37 years old and achieved all my dreams in F1.”
