Altior Triumphs Once Again

Altior Triumphs Once Again

Altior has extended his flawless obstacles record with a win in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton. The Nicky Henderson-trained eight-year-old looked largely untroubled throughout the race and took the lead on the penultimate fence.

Even though it was quite a scruffy jump, the Nico de Boinville-saddled horse powered on to win the race.
He still remains the clear favourite heading into March’s Cheltenham Festival for the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

“Every time it gets scary, and after yesterday when we had a few bloody noses it frightens you, but that was just flawless,” Henderson told ITV Racing after the 19-length win. “Now we will do the Clarence House at Ascot [next month] and freshen him up for Cheltenham.”

Prior to the race, Henderson indicated that he was tempted to start running Altior over three miles, with Wednesday’s King George VI Chase mooted, and says that plan may be revisited.

“If he comes through this season holding his crown then you would think about the King George next year,” he said. “But it is a big step from tdwo miles up to three. “It has to be one step at a time. We thought about the King George this year. We might have been wimps, but it is a joy to watch him doing that and I think everyone likes to see a horse do that.”
