The world middleweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin in the early hours of Sunday morning (Nigerian time) ended in a controversial draw at the T-Mobile Arena, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Golovkin was making his first boxing appearance in Las Vegas and by holding Alvarez to the draw kept hold of the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation belts.
Judge Don Trella scored the fight even, 114-114. Judge Dave Moretti scored the fight for Golovkin, 115-113 while female judge Adalaide Byrd scored the fight 118-110 against Golovkin.
The last judge scored the fight 115-113 and 116-112, both cards for Gennady Golovkin, in what was a tense fight that lasted up to the 12th round.
Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO) started the fight promisingly but Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO) gained confidence afterwards and pushed him to the ropes a number of times.
Golovkin’s jabs troubled his opponent his fight but Canelo’s punches nonetheless were powerful.
