High jumper Doreen Amata has rubbished reports in the social media insinuating that some of the athletes who are still in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil two days after the curtains were drawn on the 31st Olympic Games have been abandoned.
Amata told Completesportsnigeria.com from Rio that the athletes knew even before the start of the Games their departure dates and wondered where the reports of being abandoned came from.
“I have not been abandoned o,” said a surprised Amata in a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com on Tuesday night.
“Our flight back home to Abuja is on the 27th of this month. We were told we would be lodged in hotels after the 24th of this month when the Games Village where we have been staying since the start of the Games will be officially closed,” said the Nigerian high jump record holder who attended her third Olympics in Brazil.
Amata failed to go past the qualifying round of her event in Rio and believes her romance with injury throughout the outdoor circuit must have played a huge part.
“I was ready for the Games. I have cleared 1.95m this year and looks good to make my first final in the high jump. I even brought my coach here but things didn’t go as planned,” said the athlete who made the final of the event at the IAAF Wolrd Championships last year in Beijing, China.
