Recently appointed Sydney FC Coach, Graham Arnold, has revealed that the Australian club are still in talks to sign Shola Ameobi.
The striker is now officially out of contract after his Newcastle deal ran out at the end of June.
After enjoying life at the World Cup in Brazil, Ameobi’s luck could be extending even further, with the possibility of more fun in the sun, if Sydney follow up their interest.
“We’re still negotiating with Shola Ameobi but he’s one of six international strikers we are talking to.
“The other five are Europeans and two of them have played in the World Cup in Brazil.
“They all have different agents but I have spoken to most of these players personally. They have had, and are still having, good careers and still have an upside to their game and aren’t finished.
“I need the right player who’ll come to Sydney FC for the right reasons, to play good football and be successful.
“Some of the players we are talking to are out and out number nines who are lethal in the penalty area.
“We’re practising a system to take to New Zealand for exhibition matches.
“If you look at the really good teams (at the World Cup), a lot of them have star quality in the front third and the strikers work very hard.”
While the Aussie League doesn’t kick off again until October, Sydney FC face Newcastle United of course in only 12 days time.
Though it appears unlikely that Shola will be facing his old teammates when Newcastle line-up in New Zealand on 22nd July.
