James Anderson will be rested for England’s third Test against Sri Lanka while there are recalls for Stuart Broad and Jonny Bairstow. The 36-year-old Anderson has only taken one wicket in 41 overs on the spinner-friendly pitches in the opening two Tests, which England won to take an unassailable 2-0 lead into the third and final head-to-head, which gets under way in Colombo from Friday.

Indeed, with the side’s spinners accounting for all 20 wickets in the second Test victory in Kandy, Anderson admitted to feeling like a “spare part”.
Therefore, he will get a chance to rest while fellow paceman Broad comes in for his first appearance of the tour.

Anderson said on BBC Sport: “With the winter we have ahead it makes sense for Stuart to get some cricket. “We have what will be a tough tour in the West Indies and it could be a long period without him bowling. “To have a game under his belt is good for him and for the team.”

Meanwhile, Bairstow will come in for his first appearance after recovering from an ankle injury and he will replace all-rounder Sam Curran who has picked up a side strain.

However, the 29-year-old will be used solely as a number three batsman with Ben Foakes continuing as wicketkeeper following his impressive displays in the opening two Test matches.

Sri Lanka will again be without injured captain Dinesh Chandimal, while spinner Akila Dananjaya also misses out because he continues to have his bowling action investigated.

In one other change, uncapped all-rounder Charith Asalanka is replaced in the squad by top-order batsman Dhanushka Gunathilake.
