Anderson Wins In Vienna To Book ATP Finals Spot

Kevin Anderson defeated Kei Nishikori in straight sets to win the Vienna Open and sealed his place in the ATP Finals in the process. The big-hitting South African sent down 13 aces and 36 winners as he required just under two hours to wrap up a 6-3 7-6 win against Nishikori as the Japanese suffered a ninth successive final defeat.

Anderson, who lost out to Roger Federer in the final at Wimbledon in the summer, is now relishing the prospect of being the first player from his country since Wayne Ferreira in 1995 to compete at the season-ending ATP Finals, which take place at London’s O2 Arena next month.

The 32-year-old world number eight also took time to heap praise on his opponent after picking up the winner’s trophy.

He said: “I want to congratulate Kei on a great week. You’ve been a world-class player year-in and year-out so best of luck for the rest of the year.”

There are still two places up for grabs with Nishikori, John Isner, Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem all in with a shout of qualifying at next week’s Paris Masters.
