Anichebe Told To Kick On At West Brom

Striker Victor Anichebe has been told to replicate his Crystal Palace showing regularly if he wants to become a West Brom regular.

The 26-year-old was credited with sparking the Baggies’ fightback from two goals down after being introduced as a half-time substitute at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Albions head coach Alan Irvine reckons the striker will have to begin performing at his top level, on a more consistent basis, in order to secure a regular starting place.

Irvine said: “I thought Victor had a really good pre-season and started the season well and realising he’s a really important player for us.

“I expected him to have an impact when he came on Saturday and he did that. He knows he has got to produce his best form repeatedly in order to play and there’s a big challenge for him.”

Anichebe netted his first goal of the season against Palace and was then brought down for the penalty, from which Saido Berahino rescued a point.

The former Everton star, who worked with Irvine when the Baggies head coach was assistant boss at Goodison Park, has hit the net only four times since arriving at the Hawthorns in a £6m deal in August 2013.

But Irvine is well aware of what the Nigeria international can produce when on top of his game.
He said: “Victor showed what he’s capable of doing. He’s extremely effective with his back to goal, he has good technique, brings other people into the game and he is a handful.”
