AC Milan midfielder Lucas Biglia has played down Argentina chances of winning a third FIFA World Cup title this summer in Russia, stating that the Albiceleste ‘are not favorites’ to win the title.
Argentina last won the FIFA World Cup in 1986 and have been runners four times in 1930, 1990 and 2014. The Albiceleste team have been present in all but four of the FIFA World Cups.
Biglia, who is targeting his second appearance with Argentina at the 2018 World Cup in Russia told Fox Sports Argentina that his country’s hopes are pinned on one player.
“The World Cup? We’re depending on (Lionel) Messi, but we’re not favourites we have to work a lot,” Biglia told Fox Sports Argentina.
“We got accustomed to throwing a big weight on Messi’s shoulders, all the responsibility on him.
“We depend a lot on Messi and that is not good. We need to learn to use him and not wear him out.”
Biglia also admits that Argentina battling Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria in Group D at the World Cup will not be easy.
“It’s not an easy group and whoever thinks otherwise knows nothing about football,” he added.
He further prayed for the return of Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain to the squad ahead of the World Cup.
The former Napoli and Real Madrid striker has not been called up since Jorge Sampaoli took over the Albiceleste job.
“Higuain was very influenced by destructive criticism, not purely by football,” Biglia said.
