Arsenal moved two points clear at the top of the English Premier League following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Newcastle United at the Emirates on Saturday.
The hosts started the game brightly with Hector Bellerin looking lively in the right-hand side of their midfield and creating problems for the Newcastle defence.
Laurent Koscienly scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute, nodding home a corner kick.
Newcastle United who have lost their last two games carved out the first real chance of the game in the 16th minute.
Mbemba’s cross found Wijnaldum, who forced a save from Petr Cech.
The visitors’ confidence grew as Ayoze Perez wasted another chance eight minutes later after he was played through by Cheik Tiote.
The Magpies continued to dominate the game in the second half with Wijnaldum and Mitrovic coming close to getting the curtain raiser after the break.
Arsene Wenger’s men took the lead 18 minutes from time when Giroud headed a corner into the air and Koscienly reacted fast nodding the ball into the net.
Arsenal took control of the game afterwards, but were unable to find a second goal.
In the end, Newcastle were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal as they lost their third game in a row.
Also on Saturday, Leicester failed to defeat a defensively strong Bournemouth on as it finished 0-0 at the King Power Stadium.
Both sides had quite some good chances to score but crucially missed them.
Algeria international Riyad Mahrez had a penalty saved by Arthur Boruc in Bournemouth goal in the first half, Jamie Vardy the man brought down in the box .
The draw deprived the Foxes any chances of climbing to the top as they are now two points behind Arsenal.
