–Following £15m Vermaelen sale to Catalan giants
Barcelona have now paid for 34.6% of Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium with transfer deals Thomas Vermaelen is the latest Arsenal player to move to Barcelona, with the Gunners pocketing £15million for the sale of their captain.
Vermaelen follows the well-trodden route of swapping Arsenal for Barca, with Arsene Wenger making a surprising amount of money selling players to the Catalan club.
Indeed, Vermaelen’s transfer means Barca have now paid Arsenal £135million in transfer fees for eight different players – with the amount paying for 34.6% of the Emirates Stadium.
It’s no secret that Arsenal have been a selling club in recent years to pay for their £390million new stadium, which has restricted their chances of winning trophies.
Barca have helped pay the stadium debut though by signing the likes of Marc Overmars, Emmanuel Petit, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Thierry Henry, Alex Hleb, Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas and now Vermaelen in big money deals.
Arsenal will probably hope it ends there though…
