Nigeria's top ranked table tennis star, Aruna Quadri has been nominated for the 2016 Male Table Tennis Star for the outgoing year, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
According to a media release on the International Table Tennis Federation website, the 28-year-old Rio 2016 Olympics quarter-finalist is the only African player shortlisted for the award.
Aruna will battle the 2016 Men's World Cup champion and two-time 2016 ITTF World Tour Super Series winner Fan Zhendong, Ma Long, a Rio 2016 Olympic Games Singles and Team Champion, and Jun Mizutan, a bronze medallist at the Rio Olympics, for the prestigious award.
The ITTF Star Awards, which is in its fourth edition, will be held at the Doha's famous and prestigious Sheraton Hotel to celebrate the world's best table tennis players' achievements in 2016.
In the female category, Ding Ning from China will face stiff opposition from Miu Hirano, Mima Ito and Kim Song for the top prize.
In addition to the Male and Female Table Tennis Stars, six other awards will be handed in Doha.
They include Male Para Table Tennis Star presented by Tinsue, Female Para Table Tennis Star presented by Stag International, Table Tennis Star Coach presented by Butterfly, Table Tennis Star Point presented by Seamaster, Table Tennis Breakthrough Star presented by Monday Club and the Table Tennis Fair Play Star.
The nominees for these awards will be announced in the coming weeks. The winners will be crowned on 8 December
