Hosts Nigeria were impressive at the 2018 African Athletics Championships in Asaba on Friday with gold medals in
women’s long jump and 4x100m relay, as well as a silver in
men’s 4x100m, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Ese Brume equalled her season’s best mark of 6.83m to win gold in the women’s long jump, remarkably her third gold medal at the African Championships in the event.
Brume had also won gold in Marrakech, Morocco and Durban, South Africa in 2014 and 2016 respectively.
Also on Friday, Chioma Onyekwere, who claimed bronze in Durban two years ago, won gold in the women’s discus
with a mark of 68.09m.
The biggest gold for Team Nigeria on Friday was won by the 4x100m women led by Blessing Okagbare (Joy Udo-Gabriel, Tobi Amusan and Rosemary Chukwuma) who beat Cote d’Ivoire
in the final in a time 43.77s.
Men’s 100m champion Akani Simbine anchored South Africa to
gold in the final of the men’s 4x100m in a time of 38.25s, beating Nigeria’s quartet of Ogho-Oghene Egwero,
Divine Oduduru, Emmanuel Arowolo and Seye Ogunlewe to second
