Asher-Smith Setting Sights On Olympics

After securing European Championship gold this week, Dina Asher-Smith is already starting to focus on the Olympics in two years time.

The 22-year-old sprinter recorded a British record when securing first place in Berlin, in a time of 10.85 seconds.

That is the joint fastest 100m time of the year by a female athlete and proves her ability to mix it with the world’s best sprinters. Asha-Smith stated: “To run a 10.8 in the championships is a big deal.I did everything right.

“I was so happy to nail it in the final because I know there are so many talented people around me, but you have to ignore that.”

It was the Londoner’s second individual gold medal in a major event, having snatched gold in the 200m at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam.

But Asher-Smith has already got her mind set on bigger things, as she plans for Olympic success in 2020.

The Briton won bronze in the 4x100m relay in Rio but is now fully focused on claiming individual success in Japan.

Asher-smith added: “I wanted the world leading time, but I will try again later in the season. I am hoping to do the same thing in Tokyo (at the 2020 Olympics).”
