Awoniyi Rejects Esperance, Man City Show Interest

The future of Taiwo Awoniyi is still covered in mist with six weeks left before the start of the Fifa Under 20 World Cup in New Zealand, SL10.ng understands.

In the last few days, the Flying Eagles striker has held high-level talks on his next career step.
After the roundtable discussions, Taiwo Awoniyi has turned down the opportunity to join Tunisian side Esperance, and has insisted that his first professional club must be in Europe.

Just like the Bernard Bulbwa scenario, Esperance did all they could to convince Awoniyi to hop on a plane to Tunis by offering him a five – year contract with a signing bonus of 650,000 euros.

In the proposed deal, his monthly salary was set at €40,000 and other incentives include free medical, housing and four business class tickets to Nigeria per season.

The outright rejection of The Blood and Gold has taken him back to square one but there are several teams in Europe that have opened a line of communication with his agent.

On Friday, the intermediary, as Fifa calls it these days,  that brokered the deal that took Kelechi Iheanacho to Manchester City asked Taiwo Awoniyi’s minders about the possibility of joining The Citizens after the Fifa Under 20s.

The interest from Manchester United and Everton has been revived, and he’s also attracting attention from Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, Anderlecht, Red Bull Salzburg and Porto.
