Babalade: Super Eagles Defence Is Weak Link, Need New Left-Back

By Izuchukwu Okosi: Former Super Eagles defender Ajibade Babalade has urged the technical crew of the national team to scout for more defensive players before the 2018 World Cup particularly in the left-back position, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.‎

Anorthosis defender Shehu Abdullahi was the Man of the Match in Nigeria’s crucial 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia as his assist led to Alex Iwobi’s goal that ultimately qualified Nigeria for the World Cup.

“We need some left- backs for  competition with Elderson Echiejile. That was the weak link in the team during the qualifiers,” Babalade noted.

“The right-back Abdullahi was impressive against Zambia and the central defenders too, but these guys need good alternatives.

“At the World Cup, they’ll face tougher opponents and steps must be taken to ensure the team is improved. I hope some players in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) get to impress in friendlies expected to be played before then,” ‘Kunde’ as the former Shooting Stars of Ibadan is affectionately called during his playing days concluded.

  • You are right. The left back is weak

  • Yes o echejile is too poor

  • He’s still better than getting an inexperienced player there. He’s solid at the back just not good bombing forward

    • Solid @ which bak??? Any tricky player will leave him behind, did u notice hw he was outran by Zambian no.2??? Dah could have leaded to a goal

  • We have Ola Aina

  • That’s true, and in addition, I think friendly matches with a competitive country should be organised, countries Brazil, Belgium,France Spain. Etc, not some kind of country we can’t find on the world Map.

  • That’s true the left back is weak nd have no confidence at all

  • Echeijile is weak

  • I think we need a creative Medfielder .
So Mose will not be over work,
    And a prolific striker ,
we would finish the Zambians if our strikers were a bit clinical in front of goal ..
    They well securing the ticket..

  • For reasons unknown Elderson Echiejile performed well on Saturday. Maybe the presence of Aina Ola, he put everything. Yet we still need a left back. As it is he is still the best left footed player we have. No serious challenge yet. Aina Ola can do the job as he did the few minutes he was on. But he is not a left footer. If there is a local league player that is good, he must have been discovered since but it seems that there is none. So Echiejile stays. Tammy Abraham should be pursued vigorously now. We need a good finisher. Odion Ighalo seems to be disappointing. All those stress won’t have been there if he was able to bury one or two of those passes. That area should looked into too. Let the search begin immediately.

My brother you are correct. Ighalo for a long time is a clinical finisher with slightest opportunity. We need goal poacher.

    • Good talk Mr dc.even the right wing

    • Good comment my fellow nigerians,we need a good striker to contest with igalo maybe we try iwakaeme also in thr area once we have qualify and there will be friendly games to examine all the boys.

      Good points.
Though Echiejile’s improvement probably has nothing to do with Ola Aina’s presence, but rather his (Echiejile’s) increasing activity at his new club. He’d been relatively inactive over the past season in Standard Liege (6 appearances over six months) and Sporting Gijón (3 appearances over 6 months). Very few players can continue to stay at the top level with that level of restricted club appearances. His decision to move to Sivasspor is probably the best thing happening to his career at this moment. With regular club appearances, Echiejile will keep on improving and regaining his fitness, composure and confidence, and we’ll probably see his best around the World Cup period. For me he remains our best left back for now and needs our support to get to his best.
The second left back option is probably Stanley Amuzie. Like Echiéjilé, he had a torrid past season in Sampdoria where he made no appearance for the whole season. But I believe his recent transfer to Swiss club, Lugano may open up things for him and he may just sneak into the final World Cup squad. In terms of talent, I think Stanley Amuzie is Super Eagles future left back regular. That’s not taking anything from Ola Aina who’ll very likely make the squad either as alternate right back or alternate left back.
For the top 9 position, I pray Rhor tries out Anthony Nwakaeme against Algeria so that we can see what he is capable of in National colours. Something tells me he may end up our top 9 at the World Cup. Ighalo is fantastic on his good days, but I worry about his inconsistency. For Iheanacho, I hope we don’t continue the mistake of playing him as a top 9. Iheanacho is first and foremost a playmaker or at best, a support striker. Playing him as a top 9 robs the team of his vision, game control and initiative as a playmaker. I hope his coaches both at club and Super Eagles will not prevent him from achieving his full potentials (like Chelsea did to Mikel) by continuing to play him as top 9.

Thank you sir, especially that iheanacho’s case.

Yea I agree with u Stanley amuzie of the Olympics .better than all .don’t know why rohr overlooked him completely.

  • Ola Aina should replace Echiejile at the left back, Ola Aina is young, better, faster and skillfull.

  • Somebody dat is bearing Elderson why wount he be too old. Elders ar old people…pls just replace dis old and sluggish man wit my new, young, energetic and skillful boy…OLA AINA

  • He has experience but as he is aging, he doesn’t have the pace, speed to overlap and recover fast and cover up fast. He is poor in marking. But he still has the experience. He has played for that position for a very long time.

  • Bring back taye tiwo or Emmanuel udeze

    • What! People that couldnt run? Very very old players? Emmanuel Udeze has resigned from football. Tiaye Tiawo is no good anymore and cant run!

  • Very weak, the technical crew should work on that before the commencement of the world cup proper.

  • He needs to be replaced seriously, we need new left back. Echejela is out of his Prime. He can’t do more than this.

  • I won that Nig vs Zam prediction oh una never say anything for the match.

  • I think Ola Aina fits well in that position.

  • I am number 1 man who always complain about dt left back. To me juwon oshaniwan is better than echiejile
