Karlo Bartolec has confirmed that he almost joined Southampton but the moved failed to happen when Cedric Soares stayed at St Mary’s. The 23-year-old former Croatia international defender, who currently plies his trade for Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland, was linked with several top European clubs during the summer transfer window.
The Saints looked on course to win the race with Cedric heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and boss Mark Hughes saw Bartolec as an ideal replacement.
However, when United failed to meet the Saints’ asking price for Cedric, he stayed put and that put a block on Bartolec securing a switch to the Premier League.
He told 24sata: “I could have gone to Southampton this summer. I was hoping Portugal’s Soares would go to Manchester United, but that failed, so I missed my move to the Premiership. They were looking for 25m euros for him, and I could have been his replacement.”
