Baxter Rules Out England Gig

Rob Baxter says he is happy at Exeter and doesn’t feel the time is right for him to take the England job. Current England boss Eddie Jones is set to leave the role when his contract expires in 2021 and there has already been talk about who could potentially replace the Australian.

Wales boss Warren Gatland has been linked with the position and RFU interim chief Nigel Melville revealed on Wednesday that he would like to speak to the New Zealander, along with numerous other candidates.

Exeter director of rugby Baxter, who led the Chiefs to the Premiership title in the 2016/17 season, is another name that has emerged in connection with the Red Rose’s hotseat.

However, the 47-year-old, who was part of England’s coaching team for the 2013 summer tour to Argentina and Uruguay, believes now is not the right time to move into international rugby.

“I would say it would be unlikely if I’m honest with you,” he said on the Will Greenwood podcast. “I don’t want to do it yet. Obviously it’s an accolade and it’s coaching at a high level.

“What would really excite me is working with a different group of players, some of the best players in the country which means that they’re some of the best players in the world.

“So there’s loads of attractive reasons for it, but the attractive reasons have got to outweigh what you want in your life at any given time, and at the moment what I have in my life here in Exeter is more important to me.”
