Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has told young prospect Sean Longstaff to soak up as much knowledge as possible from Jonjo Shelvey. Longstaff is a product of Newcastle’s academy and made his senior debut for the north-east outfit in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season.
He has been loaned out to Kilmarnock and Blackpool to gain experience over the last few seasons, however, Newcastle refused to let him leave on-loan again this summer.
Benitez feels the 20-year-old, who netted eight times in 42 outings with Blackpool last term, would benefit from spending time with the first team at St James’ Park.
The Spaniard admits Longstaff could still be loaned out in January but believes fellow midfielder Shelvey can aide his development for the time being.
Benitez said: “We told him we wanted him to stay with us. If he’s around us he pick something up from Jonjo Shelvey or the other senior players.
“And after that if he’s not playing, OK we will give him the chance to go on loan and try to have some games.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
