Bennett Hails England Depth

England head coach Wayne Bennett has talked up the depth in his squad after Saturday’s victory over New Zealand.

The hosts had to show character to come from 16-12 behind in the second half at the KCOM Stadium in the first Test of the three-match series.

Despite losing captain Sean O’Loughlin to injury in the opening stages England battled on and eventually edged the clash 18-16.

Bennett was without the likes of Sam Burgess, James Roby, Kallum Watkins, Ryan Hall and Gareth Widdop, and believes the performance proves they have a deep squad to call on.

However, he has warned against complacency ahead of the second Test at Anfield and expects New Zealand to come out fighting.

Bennett said: “We’re building some depth, which is important, and we’re building a lot of young men with desire who really want to rattle the cages of Australia and New Zealand.

“It was important for both teams to play like we did today to show everybody that it’s a full-on Test series.

“It’s the best of three games and I’ve no doubt next week won’t be any easier. It will be tougher because New Zealand will want to win.”
