Team Sky’s Egan Bernal says the Giro d’Italia could be his focus for 2019 as he hopes to lead the team at a Grand Tour.
The Colombian excelled in his first season for Dave Brailsford’s outfit, winning the Tour of California and playing a vital domestique role at the Tour de France.
Bernal is seen as a future Tour contender but with four-time winner Chris Froome and reigning champion Geraint Thomas set to focus on the Grande Boucle in 2019, his chances will be limited.
Instead, he could look at the Giro and the mountainous route could suite his rangy style.
The 21-year-old says discussions have been held regarding his plans and while nothing is concrete, he has hinted that May’s ride for the Maglia Rosa maybe his biggest focus.
“I’ve spoken to the team a bit but nothing is really certain,” he is reported as saying by News Caracolin Colombia. “I like the Tour de France very much. It excites me but Chris (Froome) and (Geraint) Thomas are going there, so maybe the Giro d’Italia is a good option for me. I’ll go where the team sends me.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
