Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has been called up to England’s squad for the games against Spain and Switzerland. The Three Lions already have three keepers in their squad – Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Southampton’s Alex McCarthy – but Gareth Southgate has made the decision to bring a fourth into the ranks.
Bettinelli will link-up with his England team-mates at St Georges Park later on Tuesday and this will be his first call-up to the senior team, having represented the Under-21 side on just one occasion.
The 26-year-old’s addition is the latest step in an incredible transformation for a player that spent the first half of the previous campaign on the Fulham bench in the Championship.
Bettinelli has featured in two Premier League matches for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side this season – the 4-2 victory against Burnley at Turf Moor and the 2-2 draw with Brighton at the AMEX Stadium last time out.
