Bjorn Expected Thomas-Spieth Pairing

Thomas Bjorn says he wasn’t surprised to see Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth paired together at the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Despite forming a great partnership at the two previous Ryder Cups, Spieth and reigning Masters champion Patrick Reed were separated at Le Golf National in what was a bold call from captain Jim Furyk.

Europe ended up thrashing USA 17.5-10.5 in France to regain the trophy and the fallout has already started in the American ranks, with Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson reportedly nearly coming to blows.

Reed has also claimed Spieth didn’t want to play with him in the biennial event, whilst the 28-year-old has questioned Furyk’s decision to bench him for two sessions.

Thomas and Spieth played together four times, winning three times and losing just once, and Bjorn says it made sense to put the two good friends together.

Asked whether he was surprised Reed and Spieth were not reunited, the Dane told Sky Sports News: “Not really to be honest.

Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are childhood friends and they are very close. I had a high expectation of those two playing together throughout the whole week.

“Pairings are great when they work out, but it doesn’t mean because they work in one Ryder Cup, they’ll be great in the next Ryder Cup. I don’t think Jim had much choice when you have two who get on so well together, and it seemed to work out.”
