Trent Boult’s four wickets have hauled New Zealand back into the first Test against Pakistan after day two in Abu Dhabi.

Having been dismissed for a woeful 153 in their first innings, the Kiwis managed to reduce the Asians to 59-2 at stumps on day one and they took wickets with regularity on Saturday to dismiss Pakistan for 227 and keep their first-innings lead down to just 74.

Despite losing Tom Latham to a first-ball duck, the Black Caps moved on to 56-1 in their second knock at the close of play and are 18 runs short of the home side’s total in the United Arab Emirates, with every chance of setting them a decent fourth-innings chase.

Overnight batsmen Haris Sohail (38) and Azhar Ali (22) both fell with the score on 91 but Babar Azam’s 62 and 43 from Asad Shafiq ensured that Sarfraz Ahmed’s side were in credit after their first innings.

The tail failed to wag, however, with Colin de Grandhomme and Ajaz Patel both claiming a couple of scalps to help the Kiwi cause.
