Brentford Defender Odubajo On Nigeria Radar For International Switch

Brentford full-back Moses Odubajo has been approached for a Nigeria call-up and possibly feature for the Super Eagles at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, reports

The 25-year-old, who played for England’s youth teams under Aidy Boothroyd, is set to switch countries to play for three-time African champions.

He played for England U20s in 2015 – but has yet to make a senior appearance for the Three Lions.

AFCON 2019: Rohr Contacts Huddersfield’s Billing For Nigeria Switch

The defender made five appearances for the young Three Lions in that period.

Odubajo has battled back from two years of injury hell with a dislocated knee to rejoin Brentford this season and get regular games in the Championship.

And he will get rewarded with an international call-up after getting on the radar of Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr according to a report in British online news tabloid, the

Odubajo will be included in the squad for next year’s qualifier against Seychelles, with the finals to be held at the end of the season in Cameroon.

Earlier this season Odubajo admitted he considered quitting football during his two years of injury setback.

It can be recalled that Super Eagles coach, Gerhot Rohr recently told CSN that Huddersfield Town midfielder Philip Billing has been contacted for possible switch to play international football for Nigeria.

fastest and most technical modern day full back, Eagles gradually taking shape to become invisible in the world of football

  • Nawa o!the person on the picture here is not Odubajo now!

Actually, Sean is right. That’s not odubajo.

  • Yes i have seen him play and that is not odubanjo.injury almost ruined him,a fine player.

  • Good one if we can get him to play for the Super Eagles. I used to watch him more during his time at Hull City;I bet this guy is a hell of a right full back.
Though we seem to have a glut of players at the right full back position presently-Ola Aina, Shehu Abdullahi, Tyrone Ebuehi,Bryan Idowu etc, the availablity of Moses Odubajo would further strengthen our options there.
The midfield, especially the attacking midfield department needs an urgent injection of new talents. No effort should be spared in trying out new players there. The likes of Eberechi Eze of QPR, Phillip Billing of Huddersfield Town, Ifeanyi Mathew of Lillestroem etc should be sounded out ASAP.

    • Yes, three areas that need reinforcements are goal keeper, a second left back and attacking Midfield.

We have options in every other position. Odubanjo will probably be fighting for third spot at right back behind Ebuehi and Aina and be competing with Shehu (always injured) and Idowu.

I agree Ifeanyi Matthew needs a good look at As does Eze and Iyayi Believe Atiemwen who plays in Croatia with HNK Gorica with Mohammed Musa.

I must say I’ve been totally disappointed with Kelechi Nwakali who fluffed the opportunity given to him against Liberia as I am with Abdul Ajagunna who is not getting game time at Kortjik.

The search will provide a result. Rohr did say he will try oury 50 players between now and AFCON proper.
We only need 3 more good players GK, LB and AM and the squad will be complete. At than its to add players better than we have already (continuous improvement)

  • The best Nigerian midfielder at the moment remains Eberechi Eze of QPR, I wonder why he hasn’t been invited. He is the ideal playmaker the team needs and is way ahead of everyone we have at the moment

I like Shehu Abdulahi, Ebuehi and Ola Aina but the best right backs we have at the moment are Musa Mohammed and Moses Odubajo! Both are flying wingers and great defenders. They will give the team good width going forward and solidity at the back. They are also good in crosses and Musa is a gem in set pieces plus penalties!

Interestingly, Odubajo has been turning out at left-back for Brentford, so let’s wait and see how Rohr utilises him

      • Sorry but Ola Aina has better stats than Musa

        2018 season details/

        Musa Mohammed (HNK Gorica) Croatia
played  12, no goals, no assists 762 minutes on the pitch

Ola Aina (Torino) Italy serie A
Played 11, no goals one assist 824 minutes on the pitch

Aina plays Serie A (top 5 league) at a far higher level and has more minutes on the pitch despite playing one match less and more effective on the pitch than Musa,

Maybe Musa Mohammed’s time will come, for now, let him find his feet in club football before challenging for a place in the national tem.
The chap is a pretty decent prospect though…..

          • Yep, although he is doing ok at his club, he needs a higher profile club to be seen regularly. He is currently playing almost out of sight. He has played bit part in Turkey then Bosnia then Bulgaria and now Croatia.
He needs to play in a good league in order to assess his ability properly.

This is only his second season playing more than 10 games in one season, he needs consistency.

Even if he went to a small or medium sized club in the top 5 (England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany) he will get exposure and a better profile.

He is young, 22 and needs to be playing in a decent league in order to stand a chance.

With manages like Rohr and Southgate (England) always going for younger and younger players these days, 22 seems too old to still be trying to find one’s feet as a football.
But I hear you, he still has time in his hands, but not much of it in the national team climate that he finds himself.

    • Door is not closed though, he called up Mikel Agu (25), Semi Ajayi (25) and Jamilu Collins (24) recently (after the world cup)

He just needs to be visible and play in a decent league to prove himself
