Nigeria's 2017 CAF Champions League campaigners, Enugu Rangers, lost 4-1 to Zamalek in their first leg Round of 32 match in Cairo on Sunday, March 12 2017.
One of the players who ensured the Egyptian giants take a healthy lead to the second leg this weekend was Nigerian-born Stanley Ohawuchi who scored Zamalek's first goal.
Ahead of the return leg in Enugu, Completesportsnigeria'com's JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at the history of CAF club competitions and highlights five Nigerian players who have helped other African clubs to eliminate Nigerian clubs. The list below excludes Ohawuchi who still has second leg against Enugu Rangers todecide the success or otherwise of his mission.
1. EMMANUEL AMUNEKE (Zamalek Vs Stationary Stores: CAF Champions League Semi-Final-1993)
Egyptian giants Zamalek ousted Nigeria's Stationary Stores in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in 1993.
One of the players who made it happen for Zamalek was former Nigeria international, Emmanuel Amuneke, who impressed in both legs of the fixture.
Zamalek won the first leg 3-1 in Cairo, lost the return leg 1-0 in Nigeria but went through 3-2 on aggregate.
Amuneke and Zamalek went on to lift the trophy after beating Ghana's Asante Kotoko 7-6 on penalties – their third CAF Champions League title.
2. WILLY OKPARA (Orlando Pirates Vs BCC Lions: CAF Champions League Round 2- 1995)
Former Super Eagles and Flying Eagles goalkeeper Willy Okpara, made history with Orlando Pirates as they were crowned champions of the CAF Champions League in 1995 despite being their first ever appearance.
Pirates beat ASEC Mimosas 3-2 on aggregate to emerge champions.
Before going all the way to the final, Pirates met BCC Lions of Nigeria in the Second Round of the competition and won 2-1 on aggregate.
The first leg in Nigeria ended 1-1 before Pirates secured passage into the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win in the second leg with Okpara turning out outstanding performance in goal for Pirates.
3. OGOCHUKWU OBIAKOR (Etoile Du Sahel Vs Julius Berger: CAF Cup Winners' Cup Final- 2003)
Julius Berger defeated Tunisian club Etoile Du Sahel 2-0 in the first leg final of the 2003 CAF Cup Winners' Cup.
The Fatai Amoo-led Julius Berger team thought they had done enough ahead of the second leg but Nigerian-born Ogochukwu Obiakor had other ideas.
Obiakor netted a hat-trick (2nd, 60th, 87th minute) to secure a memorable 3-2 aggregate win for Etoile Du Sahel.
4. AUSTIN EJIDE (Etoile Du Sahel vs Julius Berger: CAF Cup Winners' Cup Final- 2003)
Apart from Obiakor, another Nigerian who played a part in Etoile Du Sahel's CAF Cup Winners' Cup final triumph over Julius Berger was former Nigeria goalkeeper, Austin Ejide.
After missing the first leg in Abeokuta, Ejide was in action in the second leg and kept a clean sheet as Obiakor's hat-trick gave Etoile the win.
5. ONYEKACHI OKONKWO (Orlando Pirates Vs Enyimba: CAF Champions League Group Stage- 2006)
After helping Enyimba to a back-to-back CAF Champions League title win (2003 and 2004), Onyekachi Okonkwo joined South Africa's Orlando Pirates.
In the group stage of the 2006 CAF Champions League, Okonkwo with Orlando Pirates, faced Enyimba in Group B.
In their first meeting at the Aba Township Stadium, Orlando Pirates with Okonkwo in action, held Enyimba to a 1-1 draw.
Enyimba needed to avoid defeat against Orlando Pirates in their last group game to qualify for the semi-finals. But the Aba Elephants lost 1-0, no thanks to Okonkwo's goal!
